Here at theCHIVE, we’ve worked with Sabrina Nichole a number of times and there’s a lot to like about this naturally beautiful model. She always shows up to every shoot, like her now-famous Jessica Rabbit pictorial, with a positive attitude. Sabrina is always on time, which is more important than you might think given the amount of crew who might be left sitting around on a shoot.
Also, Sabrina likes mashed potatoes… a lot.
Three days ago, Sabrina was boiling water to make mashed potatoes. When she went to pour the boiling water into the strainer she changed her grip and lost control of the pot. The entire pot of boiling water spilled onto her legs.
“It’s a different kind of pain,” Sabrina told me. “The kind of pain where you actually can’t process it right away. But I knew something was terribly wrong and you have to act fast… Luckily my neighbors heard me scream and immediately called an ambulance. Get this, my neighbors upstairs are just teenagers, but you should have seen how fast they acted, even cutting my sweats off to prevent the fabric from sticking to the wound.”
Sabrina was rushed to the hospital with 2nd degree burns on her legs and 1st degree burns on her feet. “It felt like was was being stabbed and set on fire,” she said.
Sabrina has a great sense of humor. I asked her, “I take it you’re not going to be eating mashed potatoes again?”
“Are you kidding, John? My dad asked me if he could bring me anything while I was in the hospital. I told him I wanted mashed potatoes. He actually brought them to my bedside. They tasted amazing but I fell asleep eating the second bite. I will never give up on mashed potatoes.”
When you’re a model for a living, your legs are rather important. But Sabrina’s attitude is amazing. She returned home from the hospital this morning. “I’m out of the hospital in three days. If you’d asked the doctors if that would be possible a few days ago they would have said hell no. Life could always be worse, in some ways I’m lucky. I was wearing sweats at the time and if I had been wearing jeans it would have trapped the heat and stuck to my skin. I’m moving my toes right now. How cool is that?”
“My body is my career but if I look weird or different that’s ok, people are always looking for models who might not look like everybody else.” Sabrina laughs, “Plus, there’s always photoshop.”
Sabrina is out of the hospital but not out of the woods. There’s still a chance she will need skin grafts but won’t know until they examine her legs on Friday. I asked her how she’s doing emotionally today?
“I have to be honest I’ve been really upset about this. I’ve been trying to be strong for my mom and dad so they wouldn’t feel bad. I’ve had to grasp that it’s ok to be upset, I’m in pain. But it’s been the outpouring of support that has eased my pain, the the people that have wished me well that is bringing me back.”
As I was sending flowers to Sabrina today, I had an idea. Why not allow the Chive Community to send Sabrina flowers if they wanted to? If the support is helping her heal, we can definitely show her some serious love. I called Sabrina and asked if she was allergic to flowers? “Not at all, I love flowers but you don’t have to send me anything, John.”
Yeah. Not just me.
